In this Insurance Institute of London (IIL) property investors lecture David Reid Rowland will discuss water damage to properties arising from the failure of building tanking (waterproofing) system, domestic water services and drainage services. Richard Keightley will discuss causes of flooding from external sources, prospects for recovery, and the trend in future flood risk.

The seminar will discuss the prevalence and causes of water damage claims. It will cover leaks from pressurised domestic water systems, for example from burst joints or frozen pipes. David and Richard will also discuss water ingress caused by the failure of basement tanking systems. Richard will then provide a general overview of flood risk in the UK and then discuss basement drainage/surcharging issues, planning policy and building regulations requirements in relation to flood risk. He will conclude with future trends in flood risk (climate change, development in floodplain, limited funding for building new and maintaining existing flood defences.
