In this Insurance Institute of London (IIL) accident lecture Dr Emer MacSweeney & Dr Steven Allder will offer an updated understanding of the diagnosis and prognosis of mTBI, how current research is changing our ability to detect chronic structural and functional brain insurance due to mTBI and how this changes our interpretation of the long term symptoms and their prognosis.

The presentations will provide an analysis of the clinical presentation of mTBI, with correlation to the underlying neurological mechanisms and their resultant cognitive and behavioural symptoms. Why the clinical outcome can be very different in different people. The significance of disruption of brain networks and how and why these are affected in mTBI. The limitation of current diagnostic biomarkers and the potential to revolutionise today’s accepted understanding of mTBI, in the context of the latest research into mTBI imaging biomarkers. The implications of these new imaging biomarkers to provide early, accurate diagnosis and monitor effectiveness of treatment.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

• Current advanced clinical and imaging techniques for diagnosis of mTBI in 2019
• The limitations of today’s thinking
• How imaging biomarker research is changing the global understanding and interpretation of mTBI

Speaker Bios:
Emer MacSweeney has extensive experience in brain imaging and has worked in the NHS, private and medicolegal sectors; she has a specialist interest in the diagnosis of brain injury and cognitive impairment.

Steve Allder has extensive experience in research and management of acute neurological conditions. Since 2012, he has focussed his clinical research on mild traumatic brain injury, currently being lead clinical investigator on three projects using sophisticated functional imaging techniques to diagnose mTBI.
