Building design is significantly influenced by fire safety objectives. These objectives could relate to life safety, property protection, business continuity, etc. The significance of fire safety is such that most design decisions would impact the outcome from a fire safety perspective, requiring competent fire engineers to be involved throughout the design, construction, and operation of buildings.
Fire safety objectives translate into functional requirements buildings get assessed against when defining compliance with building regulations, insurance policy, client briefs, etc. To meet these requirements, buildings get designed with a multi-layer of components and systems that contribute towards adequate performance.
Identification and understanding of what constitutes a defect in the overall performance of a building is critical to inform scopes of remediation: i.e. probability of component failure is accounted for as part of the overall building system design. At the same time, outcomes are significantly influenced by the competence of those involved in establishing component, building system or overall building performance.
