Modern methods of construction & alteration - fire risk assessment

In this IIL property lecture Howard Passey will discuss the implications of the trend towards the use of modern construction materials and methods on the effectiveness of assessments in effectively controlling the fire risks in new and materially altered premises.

This presentation will consider modern construction methods and materials including those issues associated with the use of ‘green’ energy sources and fire engineered solutions in order that the risks to life, property and business are better understood. it will review current concerns regarding the competence of those engaged in the development of fire strategies and completing fire risk assessments and the steps being taken by fire and insurance industries to address.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

• Current and emerging building technologies and the risks associated with their implementation and materials used
• The issues associated with the competence of those involved in the development of fire strategies and fire risk assessments
• The means for ensuring that both strategies and assessments are developed by competent persons and will address not only risk to life, but also those associated with the protection of the premises and ongoing business viability post incident
