150 years separate the composition of two contrasting works: Beethoven’s First Symphony and Shostakovich’s Tenth. Beethoven’s introduction to the genre he would come to dominate owed much to his predecessors Mozart and Haydn, but even in this comparatively youthful work his genius is apparent. Its lightness contrasts with the drama of Shostakovich’s very personal masterpiece, his first symphony after the death of Stalin, who had exerted such a malign influence on the composer’s life and music.
