
Following disruptions and threat to security at Gatwick and Heathrow airports, drones have hit the headlines in recent months, resulting in Theresa May’s call for consideration on stricter regulation and guidelines. But, their use can be dated back to the mid-1800’s, when a balloon warfare system was developed – although not with the greatest success.
During World War I, with remote control technology still in its infancy, Elmer Ambrose Sperry, the inventor of the gyroscope, was hired by the US Navy to develop a fleet of “air torpedoes” to be launched by catapult and fly over enemy positions. By World War II, pilots were actually involved in flying “drones” at take off before the early introduction of radio controlled links took over and pilots ejected to safety. However, many drones crashed. John F. Kennedy’s older brother, Joseph, was one of the first pilots who died over Suffolk in August 1944, whilst piloting a drone that exploded prematurely.
In the intervening years since WWII, technology has advanced the function and reliability of drones, which are increasingly used in reconnaissance of natural catastrophes and surveillance. Recent developments in technology are now making drones smaller, more powerful and more widely used – some inserting cameras, GPS trackers and sense and avoid technology, as well as making them more affordable for everyday enthusiasts.
