Data Lab Lunchtime Lecture: The design of nothing

Join the Lloyd’s Data Lab for a lunchtime lecture from data visualisation specialist Andy Kirk.

In this lecture UK based data visualisation specialist, Andy Kirk, will ask you to think about communicating and reading ‘nothingness’, using this notion to explore some of the key considerations data visualisers face.

Andy will look at this topic from three perspectives relating to nothing: absence, emptiness and invisibility. He will explore:

• The nuances of representing null and zero: What techniques exist for visualising the absence of data compared to the absence of amount
• The often-neglected power of emptiness, showing that blank space is a vital design component that sometimes needs to be used with courage
• What we can learn from the ‘invisible’: What does it mean to not see things? What can we learn about what is not included? How does what is not included shape what is?
