This is particularly pertinent to container shipping, a sector that has witnessed extraordinary growth in recent decades. That expansion has brought major safety and technical challenges for shipowners/managers, ports, ship masters, pilots and crews. Initiatives are underway to mitigate some of these challenges, but much greater research, studies and resources are required to improve safety margins with container ship vessels and their operation.
