Abortive repair, is it a new casualty or the unfinished business of an old one?

19 April 2018

London, United Kingdom
Abortive repair, is it a new casualty or the unfinished business of an old one?

Despite the increase in technical specialist knowledge within shipyards, it can be the case that not all repairs are successful or the damage is still on-going.

With this in mind, how sure are you that the original peril has run its course? What happens when repaired machinery, or hull, fails again and, how many times the underwriter – and which underwriter – should indemnify for the loss?

This market briefing will explore the practical tools to consider the definition of “separate accident” or if something is a “new intervening cause”.

Our Speaker:
After qualifying as a mechanical engineer from the Universities of Surrey and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and serving onboard container vessels, Stelios joined the newbuilding project management department of a shipping company, dealing with contracts negotiations, technical specifications and the plan approval. In addition, he supervised the construction of 3 newbuilding containerships in S. Korea followed by 3 panamax and 7 post-panamax units. Stelios then joined The Swedish Club as staff surveyor and later as Technical and Marine Claims Manager, surveying and handling on site, on behalf of the insurers, a variety of major marine casualties whilst sitting the exams of The Association of Average Adjusters achieving the Fellowship status in 2017.
