Motor Vehicle Insurance - Fundamentals and Recent Developments

Motor vehicle liability insurance has been compulsory in the UK since the beginning of the twentieth century. The law has developed continuously as the practice demonstrated the areas where the relevant legislation was not sufficient to achieve its purpose. The UK’s accession to the EU and the free movement available within the Community brought a number of additions to the interpretation of the domestic rules that govern this area of law.

The amendments to the Road Traffic Act 1988 to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau Agreements in the light of these developments have been numerous. The law is ever evolving, fast developing and offering more intellectual challenges as the disputes vary every day. This all requires careful considerations of very fundamental principles of law that are applicable in the UK.

This one-day conference aims at covering the motor vehicle compulsory insurance in a broad context by putting emphasis on the fundamental principles unique to this type of insurance, their operation together with the general principles of law, and the interventions of the relevant EU Directives and CJEU decisions. Additionally, the conference will provide an expert analysis of the recent developments on insurance of automated vehicles.
