This market briefing continues the IUA/JMCC webinar series. In our third session of the year, our guest speaker will chat about his role as Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSREP) for Maritime Salvage & Intervention, which oversees the response to accidents at sea in the UK.
England’s coastal heritage tells a story of our nation’s history of marine including ports and numerous quintessential seaside resorts which contribute to our flourishing economy.
However, marine pollution has a detrimental impact on the environment of our coastline. Following two major oil spills within weeks of each other in 1993 & 1994, the 1999 “Safer Ships, Cleaner Seas” recommendation by Lord Donaldson of Lymington was completed, allowing SOSREP the authority to take control at salvage incidents where a threat of significant pollution, could help reduce contamination to UK waters.

At this market briefing, our guest speaker, Stephan Hennig, will chat with Alistair Johnston about his role as Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSREP) for Maritime Salvage & Intervention, which oversees the response to accidents at sea. We will hear about what his typical day is like, advice for those who may be interested in working in this area and who he finds inspirational. Stephan will also explain the history and importance of SOSREP to the coastal landscape of the UK, now and in the future.
