A proportion of these deaths can be attributed to the misuse of and addiction to prescription pain relievers. The CDC estimates that the total ‘economic burden’ of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year\, including the costs of healthcare\, lost productivity\, addiction treatment\, and criminal justice involvement. \nDuring this masterclass\, Ed Yorty will discuss a sampling of actual Pharmacist Mutual opioid claims\, and Donnie Calhoun will provide a historical presentation on how the opioid crisis developed to its current state and current actions to address the crisis.
