SUMMARY:Redesigning our skies
DESCRIPTION:In this Insurance Institute of London (IIL) aviation lecture Jane Johnston will talk about the Government’s policy to modernise UK airspace\, why it’s long overdue\, how long it will take and the challenges it presents to the aviation industry. \nThe network of routes that make up our invisible infrastructure in the sky\, was designed more than 50 years ago for aircraft which are now in museums. Today’s modern aircraft are capable of much higher levels of performance than the airspace allows for. \nAir traffic has more than doubled in the past 25 years and is forecast to continue rising\, but our airspace will simply run out of space if we don’t modernise it\, making best use of the latest technologies to improve efficiency and\, importantly\, environmental performance which matters enormously to communities overflown on a regular basis. \nWith Brexit looming\, the UK’s global connectivity has never been more important. The aviation industry is vital to that. The UK sits at a strategic aviation crossroads that has put us firmly on the map and makes us a recognised leader in the industry.
