DESCRIPTION:CPD visit to Barts North Wing – St Bartholomew’s Hospital 2025\nIn this IIL educational CPD visit\, members will learn about the newly restored North Wing at St Bartholomew’s Hospital\, the oldest working hospital in the country\, founded in 1123. This tour will be led by the Barts Heritage CEO\, Will Palin\, who will talk about the importance of this building and the challenges insurers faced with its restoration. \nThe Sharing Historic Barts restoration project began in 2024 and is due to be completed in September 2025\, with the building opening to the public in October 2025. The £9.5m project included major repairs to the roof\, stonework\, windows and ironwork of this Grade I-listed building designed by the acclaimed 18th-century architect James Gibbs. The two celebrated interiors\, the Hogarth Stair and Great Hall have been meticulously conserved and re-presented\, with works carried out by some of the UK’s leading experienced specialists. \nIn this visit\, members will have the opportunity to see this historic building post restoration as well as gain an understanding of its importance. \nLearning objectives\n\nUnderstanding the history of Britain’s oldest hospital and its importance in the City of London\nUnderstanding the challenge of finding cover for historic buildings undergoing restoration\nUnderstanding the art and architecture of the North Wing\n\nAttendees are responsible for arranging their own travel. The nearest tube stations are Farringdon\, Barbican and St Paul’s. \nPlaces on visits are limited and will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nA fee will be charged for all visits.
